Yogi of the Month- Kay Jaspal

Our Yogi of the Month is Kay Jaspal, who has recently completed a 30 Day Challenge. Here are her thoughts on Bikam Yoga...

For a long time I had heard of the benefits (from friends) of Bikram yoga and I wanted to start. I had been having niggling pains all over especially my shoulder and right knee. My excuse was work was getting in the way- I was working on some parliamentary business when out of the blue, general election got called, parliamentary business was on hold and I had some well deserved time off owing to me. So I went for it and I started coming to Bikram Yoga Essex in May.

I can honestly say that I was a bit nervous- I couldn’t bend down with straight legs, let alone do the back bends but the teachers and reception staff were so friendly and welcoming. I started doing about 2-3 classes a week and although it was hard going I stumbled along and while I would never say it gets easier- I did get better at managing me!

I was determined to carry on doing yoga after my little enforced break and I have. What better way to remain motivated than set myself the challenge in October?! And yes I did it ! 30 days 30 classes. Was it easy? Simple answer- no! Days 12-17 were hard- I ached all over especially my hamstrings! But I persevered and big shout out to Fiona who encouraged me all the way (as did so many others).

What’s improved? My breathing- I’m slightly asthmatic, but now no signs and no pump! No colds or coughs (fingers crossed) and no aches or pains, clear skin and I’ve dropped 3 dress sizes (obviously had to watch what I was eating too). My friends and family reactions are "you look fantastic". The sense of accomplishment in completing 30 days is amazing and I will carry on doing yoga but back to 3 times a week. I’ve never felt better physically and mentally! Lastly to everyone who comes along to practice, it wouldn’t be the same without you, I’ve had so many nice words of encouragement and compliments- BYE is definitely the place to be!
